🌸 Pressed Flower Crafts

Spring is in the air, and flowers have begun to bloom! This weather is perfect for spending time outdoors, taking in the beauty of nature, and trying out some fun, creative activities, like making crafts with pressed flowers.

Here are some of the basics you need to know to make your own pressed flower crafts!

Pick Out Your Flowers

To start your pressed flower craft journey, choose flat flowers with thin petals, as they dry evenly and are less likely to mold. Pick fresh, newly bloomed flowers in the morning, and avoid those with milky sap to prevent staining. Florida offers many beautiful native blooms, often found right in your backyard.

Some great Floridian options include:

  • Coreopsis (Tickseed)
  • Beach Verbena
  • Spanish Needle
  • Dune Sunflower
  • Skyblue Clustervine (Jacquemontia pentanthos)
  • Wild Petunia (Ruellia caroliniensis)

How to Press Flowers

Once you’ve gathered your flowers, you can start pressing them. There are a few different ways to do this:

Using a Book

  1. Place your flowers between two sheets of wax paper.
  2. Tuck the wax paper into the middle of a heavy book. (Using a dictionary might work best!)
  3. Add a few more books on top to increase the pressure.
  4. Leave them for 1–2 weeks until they’re completely dry. Handle gently when removing.

Using an Iron

  1. Place your flowers between wax paper.
  2. Set your iron to low heat, with no steam.
  3. Press the iron down for about 10–15 seconds at a time. (Make sure not to burn the flowers!)
  4. Once they look dry and flat, they’re ready to use.

Using a Microwave

  1. Place your flowers between two sheets of absorbent paper.
  2. Place the stack of absorbent paper and flowers on a microwave-safe plate.
  3. Microwave on high for 10–15 seconds. You can increase the time, however, make sure you check them every 15 seconds. (You don’t want to burn them!)
  4. Let everything cool before removing the flowers and handle them with care.
