Connecting with Nature

In a world of self-driving cars, artificial intelligence, and smartphones, there’s something that ties us to the earliest humans living millions of years ago: our connection to nature!
Here at Sustain, we look at the many ways to protect and respect our planet. Topics such as conservation and recycling focus on the ways that humans affect nature. But what about the many ways that nature helps us in return?
An average of 60% of U.S. adults report that they spend five or fewer hours in nature each week. We understand that there are factors that can affect access to outdoor time. Income, ability, access to transportation, location, and free time away from work are just some to consider that can change how you connect to nature. Let’s explore the benefits and unique ways to get started:
Benefits for mental and physical health
Studies show that your mind and body benefit from spending time in the great outdoors. The fresh air, vitamin D, and exercise are excellent for our bodies. Connecting with nature has been shown to reduce depression and anxiety, with a greater sense of belonging and peace felt afterward. Our sleep patterns and immune system get a boost, too!
Many ways to connect
You don’t need to be a pro hiker to get the benefits of outdoor time- discover what works best for you! Examples can include gardening, walking a dog, enjoying sunsets, laying at the beach, and watching an outdoor bird feeder.
Live in the moment and don’t rush
One of the best lessons from nature is that things take time to grow! If you’re starting a new outdoor activity or picking up a passion from years ago, be patient with yourself. Especially with conservation efforts such as species and habitat preservation, it’s the small steps that add up.
Join a group
Creating your unique, personal connection to nature is important. But enjoying the great outdoors with others can create lasting memories and build additional skills. From sports to conservation to hobbies, there are groups for all ages and backgrounds. Look into what groups and classes are offered in your local area.
Resources such as Green Living Toolkitare perfect for finding new ways to explore and protect our planet, including advisory boards for our Florida friends looking to get more involved.
