In Memory of Rob Lorei

The Tampa Bay community lost a champion of independent journalism this weekend with the passing of Rob Lorei. He was 70 years old and had retired earlier this year from WEDU while battling cancer.
Rob was a pioneering journalist in west central Florida and a steadfast advocate for public broadcasting. He co-founded community radio station WMNF and joined WEDU in 1995, later becoming Managing Editor of Florida This Week in 2001. His principled approach and unwavering dedication to our community leave a legacy that will not be forgotten.
For nearly 24 years, Rob served as the trusted host of Florida This Week, moderating almost 1,400 episodes with fairness, depth, and civility. He was the face of WEDU’s primetime public affairs program, bringing together journalists, politicians, community leaders, and voices from across the state and country for thoughtful, respectful conversations. Beyond the series, he moderated debates, documentaries, and community discussions—always with a commitment to balance and integrity.
Before his time at WEDU, Rob spent more than four decades at WMNF, where he was a founding member and longtime Director of News and Public Affairs. His work there laid the foundation for his career-long dedication to public media.
“It has been an honor to work alongside Rob,” said Paul Grove, WEDU President and CEO. “His integrity and commitment to providing thoughtful, accurate content strengthened WEDU’s mission and deepened our dedication to news and public affairs. I take pride in sharing that I hired Rob for this role 24 years ago. His leadership shaped Florida This Week and left an indelible mark on our station, our viewers, and our community.”
WEDU is deeply grateful for Rob’s many contributions and the standard of excellence he set for journalism in Tampa Bay. His impact will be felt for years to come.

For nearly 24 years, Rob Lorei hosted the primetime public affairs program Florida This Week. In March, WEDU gathered friends, local journalists, former panelists, and guests to celebrate Rob’s remarkable legacy. As part of the event, we shared a special video with memorable moments from his 24 years as host.
