Have you ever heard the term 'Climate Justice?' The word itself might sound a little overwhelming, but don't fret; we are here to explain it and share how it affects us.

In frank definition, Climate Justice occurs when those with the most resources to address climate crisis use them to protect vulnerable communities.

According to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, "Climate change is happening now and to all of us. No country or community is immune." He also explains that "the poor and vulnerable are the first to suffer and the worst hit."

Like many other civil rights issues, Climate Justice is about equity and equality. Ensuring that everyone lives in a fair and just society while being given the same or similar tools as everyone else.

So how do we achieve Climate Justice? We as a society have to recognize that climate injustice is human injustice. Luckily we have a generation of young people fighting to make these issues known.

How can you help achieve Climate Justice?

  • Self-Educate

Understand climate change and its effects on marginalized communities.

  • Elevate impacted communities

Reach out to local activists and get involved. Help keep these communities in the conversation.

  • Keep Representatives Accountable

Local Government is one of the best places to affect change. When they're making new zoning laws or holding town halls, you let them know their citizens want Climate Justice!

  • Power of Boycott

Money talks, and when it's not being spent, sometimes that's the loudest it gets. Many companies have switched to a green business model; it's easier than ever to make sure what you buy is ethically sourced.

Join WEDU PBS as we fight for Climate Justice in our community and stand up for a more sustainable future!
