Job Summary
This role is responsible for accurate financial reporting, general ledger management, and compliance with accounting standards applicable to nonprofit organizations. The Senior Accountant will play a key role in supporting audits, grants, budgeting, and financial analysis while collaborating across departments to advance the organization’s mission.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
- Maintain the general ledger, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and fund/account analysis
- Manage month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting
- Monitor and analyze financial activity by program, grant, and funding source
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, donor restrictions, grant requirements, and internal accounting policies
- Assist with budgeting and forecasting, including program-level and grant-based budgets
- Support internal and external audits by preparing schedules, documentation, and explanations
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable functions, including grant billings and donor receivables, as needed
- Support the preparation of tax filings and regulatory reports, including Form 990 and other required compliance documentation
- Develop and implement process improvements to strengthen internal controls, accuracy, and efficiency
- Mentor and support junior accounting staff, providing training and guidance
- Collaborate with program managers and cross-functional teams to support financial planning and decision-making
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- 4-7 years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit or fund accounting environment
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
- Experience with grants management, restricted funds, and audit support
- Proficiency in accounting systems and Microsoft Excel
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment
- Strong communication skills and a commitment to the organization’s mission
- Experience with accounting systems (e.g., Microsoft Dynamics, Blackbaud, Sage Intacct, NetSuite)
- Experience working with government or foundation grants
