WEDU PBS Announces Block Party & Open House to Celebrate 60th Anniversary


October 19 Free Community Event Will Feature Live Music, Studio Tours, Food Truck Rally, PBS Kids Characters and much more!

 

TAMPA, FL – WEDU PBS will close out a full year of celebrations honoring 60 years of service to West Central Florida by hosting a free Be My Neighbor Block Party & Open House on October 19 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The event will take place at WEDU’s Berkman Family Broadcast Center located at 1300 N. Boulevard in Tampa.

During the event, guests will be able to take a tour of the WEDU PBS studios; speak to local program producers and pitch story ideas; enjoy the PBS Kids Fun Zone with plenty of fun hands-on activities; meet some of their favorite PBS kids’ characters; listen to live performances and guest speakers; meet local first responders and explore their emergency vehicles; register to vote or update voter information; get blood pressure and vision checks; and grab lunch from the Tampa Bay Food Truck Rally. There will also be inflatables, face painters, and much more!

Just a few of the special guests scheduled to appear include:

Chef Kevin Belton: Chef Kevin Belton is the host of Create TV’s Kevin Belton’s New Orleans Kitchen and New Orleans Cooking with Kevin Belton. Self-taught Creole chef Kevin Belton, whose family ancestry is a gumbo of English, French, Native American and African, began cooking under the watchful eye of his mother and grandmother in his native New Orleans. Cooking instruction is second nature for Belton, who has spent the last 20 years teaching at the New Orleans School of Cooking. In 2018, Belton was also named a Culinary Legend by the American Culinary Federation. Chef Belton will be a featured speaker at WEDU’s Block Party & Open House and will also be available to sign copies of his cookbook that will be available for purchase during the event.

Mr. Tommy: Composer and Author Tommy Girvin has been touring the world as writer, lead guitarist and musical director for the rock singer Eddie Money for the past 30 years. Mr. Tommy has also been entertaining children for years and has the ability to connect with and inspire children musically. Mr. Tommy’s unique, interactive program gets children off their feet and encourages them to build their imagination.

Choral Artists of Sarasota: Recognized as the region’s premier professional vocal ensemble, the Choral Artists of Sarasota will premiere a new song specially composed for the WEDU Block Party & Open House. Celebrating 40 years, the Choral Artists of Sarasota honors the excellence of choral music through innovative, stimulating performances, and educational outreach.

The Hummingbirds: Recently appearing on an episode of WEDU Arts Plus, The Hummingbirds are husband-wife team S.G. and Rachel Wood. Born and raised in Detroit, now residing in Tampa, their music is both northern and southern Americana, blending both grit, and self-reliance with hospitality, and charm. They play old guitars through old amps, bang drums, and even pluck banjos sometimes.

Free parking will be available on a first come, first served basis at Blake High School located (1701 N Boulevard). Guests can walk or take a free trolley to the WEDU Studios.
