Washington Week with Gwen Ifill Visits Tampa Bay!

A Florida This Week Conversation with Gwen Ifill
Watch Now Gwen Ifill, the moderator and managing editor of PBS’s Washington Week sits down with Rob Lorei, moderator and managing editor of WEDU’s Florida This Week, in this special interview recorded February 14th, 2008, at St. Petersburg’s Mahaffey Theatre.

The first half of the interview is devoted to politics. Ifill weighs-in on Florida’s role in the race to the White House as pundits focus on the frustrated Florida delegates to the Democratic Party convention in August. She remarks, “(it’s) every political junkie’s secret fantasy to watch a convention go and not be decided in advance,” and next explains why she still considers that scenario fantasy. Lorei also asks Ifill about the “horse race” mentality that seems to pervade broadcast coverage of the 2008 Presidential contest and a remarkably long election cycle.

The last half of the engaging conversation examines journalism today, and Ifill discusses her career journey through print and broadcast news. When asked about the fate of newspapers, Ifill shares her views on the nature of on-demand information. Finally, Lorei concludes by asking Ifill her opinion of the future of PBS.
