A Community Partnership
Academy Prep Center for Education has introduced a new activity for its enrichment program, the Academy Prep Media Club. In partnership with WEDU PBS and staff and students from the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg, Department of Journalism and Media Studies, the Academy Prep Media Club teaches AP students about video production and the principles of journalism.
Throughout the semester, students get hands-on experience with video and audio production. Instruction includes being taught how to shoot video segments and interviews with fellow students and participating adults. The Media Club team members then work to produce stories that are important to them and their classmates. Additionally, Media Club members visit WEDU Studios to get a behind-the-scenes tour of the TV station and to work on the various jobs that are necessary to produce a TV program. At the end of the semester they work alongside their mentors and with WEDU staff to produce the Academy Prep Media Club News Report. This incredible learning experience is made possible by the community partnership between Academy Prep Center for Education – St. Petersburg, WEDU PBS and the University of South Florida, St Petersburg – Department of Journalism and Media Studies.
