WEDU honored with 20 Regional Emmy Nominations

October 28, 2011, Tampa, FL — The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has honored WEDU with twenty Suncoast Regional Emmy® Award nominations – more than any other public or commercial television station in the region and the most ever for WEDU, also celebrating its 53rd anniversary this month as west central Florida’s leading PBS station and source for public media.

Jack Conely, Vice President of Content for WEDU, expressed his appreciation on behalf of the talented team that produce the station’s many local productions. “This unprecedented number of nominations for WEDU’s local series A Gulf Coast Journal with Jack Perkins and Smart Health, and the documentary Jannus: American Aviator is a testament to the amazingly gifted and dedicated staff at WEDU, who combine their areas of expertise with the work of a host of local production professionals, to provide the relevant programming that is such an important part of the station’s mission. We’re all honored for the recognition that has been given to the team’s work.” said Conely.

The 2011 Suncoast Emmy Awards received a total of 972 entries, a record number and almost 100 more than last year’s submissions. The Suncoast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences is a nonprofit Florida corporation dedicated to excellence in television and offers the annual Regional Emmy Awards to television markets in the entire State of Florida; Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Lake Charles and New Orleans, La.; Mobile, Ala.; Thomasville, Ga.; and Puerto Rico. A Gulf Coast Journal with Jack Perkins brings the artful, innovative, sometimes odd and always interesting people and places of Florida’s west central coast to life. The series received 13 of the 20 Emmy® nominations. Smart Health was honored with 6 nominations, and a nomination went to the documentary Jannus: American Aviator, produced in partnership with St. Petersburg College.

“The 20 Emmy nominations from The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences signal that WEDU continues fulfill the needs of individuals for education, information, and culture through quality local programs. Our viewers depend on WEDU to provide the treasures and topics important to our community,” said Susan Howarth, President and CEO of WEDU. “It’s an honor to receive these nominations as an acknowledgement of what WEDU has accomplished in the past year. We plan to continue telling great local stories about our community,” Howarth said.

The winners of the 2011 regional Emmy® Awards will be announced on Saturday, December 3rd at the Suncoast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences annual ceremony in Fort Lauderdale.
